There’s a noticeable difference in the Bible’s portrayal of God. In some passages God is seen full of anger while others show him full of tenderness.

As early as 144AD some, like Marcion of Sinope, taught the God of the Old Testament was not the same as one of the New. The Church dealt with that issue long ago but still this pops up from time to time.

Jesus, the Church, and even the Bible itself has always maintained there is only one and the same God — the difference is with with people.

For example: Vandals thinks I’m the grouchy old man who calls the police on them but non-criminals see a different side — I’m the same guy.

Another example: My young children think I’m the smart man who helps them solve their problems, hugs them all the time, and gives them stuff. My teens think I’m the stubborn guy who makes their life difficult and requires them to bring the car home by midnight. Some of my children think I’m the stupid guy who is just out of touch while others think I’m getting smarter as they get older.

I’m the same guy, the difference is the relationship my children have chosen to have with me.

The Bible says God is “Love” (1st John 4:8, 16) and a “consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:219) all at the same time. He offers a tender relationship if we will choose it.

“Jesus said If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” — John 14:23

God … hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, … who … sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high” — Hebrews 1:1-3

God has always been pure spirit (John 4:24) and though we may not realize it, today, before Jesus the idea a human could sit on God’s throne was just not thinkable.

Prophets looking into heaven were amazed at what they saw,

And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. — Ezekiel 1:26

No one at the time thought it could be literal yet when Jesus purged our sin he bodily came out of the tomb, bodily ascended to heaven, and bodily sits on God’s throne next to Majesty.

What’s he doing there? Lots!

The Bible says he is praying for God’s mercy and grace on this dying world. It’s been noticed the wrath of God seldom falls like it did before Christ. That’s possibly because Jesus is there praying for mercy and grace — always referring to his sacrifice on the cross.

“He’s there from now to eternity to save everyone who comes to God through him, always on the job to speak up for them.” — Hebrews 4:25 (Message)

He’s preparing a place to receive us, his followers,

“I’m on my way to get a room ready for you. And if I’m on my way to get your room ready, I’ll come back and get you so you can live where I live.” — John 14:3-4 (Message)

He’s preparing us for his new world government.

“And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.” — Revelation 11:15

We are his now and have his ear, the ear of God. What a privilidge.

God … hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son … the express image of his person, — Hebrews 1:1-3

Ever wonder why the second commandment — no images of God? I think it is partly because there is only one (1) legitimate image of God. Jesus said,

He that hath seen me hath seen the Father. — John 14:9

I noticed something in Business. Phone calls are helpful and e-mail is quick but they all can leave the wrong impression. It takes a face to face, person to person meeting to truly communicate.

We can see God’s creation, review history, read the Old Testament and still get the wrong impression — God came face to face, person to person in Jesus to show what he is really like.
