Three (3) Scriptures About Church

  1. “The church is Christ’s body, in which he speaks and acts, by which he fills everything with his presence. – Ephesians 1:22-23
  2. “I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you’re joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant.” – Jesus (John 15:5)
  3. “…Whoever loves a father loves his child also.” – 1 John 5:1

What we call church, one on every street corner, is a gathering of fellow believers in Christ for strength and encouragement; nothing more or less. What the Bible calls Church is the living Christ, Jesus, acting through men and women who are connected to him like a branch to a vine, not a pyramid.

When we fall in love with God we will want to be with his children and church is a good place to do so. But which one? Probably the one that gives the most comfort and encouragement to one’s personal walk with Christ.

Fruit Season

“He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season,” — Psalm 1:3

Fruitfulness is a longstanding metaphor throughout the Bible. Corrupted Israel was compared to summer fruit (Amos 8, Micah 7); Jesus said fruitless branches are removed (John 15); vineyards and orchards, wheat and weeds — all metaphors with meaning sometimes lost to urban readers.

Something to remember about fruit in the very first Psalm — it’s produced in its season. We expect “fruit” all the time and when things aren’t spiritually popping we think something is wrong when it could be that it’s just not the right time/season.

God’s admonition is to keep pressing on, keep praying, keep meditating on God’s word (the Bible) — fruit will come in its season.

“If a man love me, he will keep my words… He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings…” – Jesus (John 14:23a & 24a KJV)

According to Jesus, a simple test of love is whether or not his words are kept.

Regardless of education, intelligence, morality, outlook, political correctness, or ecclesiastical position, if a person keeps (learns, believes, appreciates and obeys) Jesus’ words that person loves Jesus.

The opposite is also true; if Christ’s words are not kept the Love of Christ is NOT there no matter how good the arguments.

Jesus doesn’t mean just the red letters of the Bible, a few short verses later he told his disciples,

“if they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours too.” – John 15:20c (KJV)

Rev. Crepon, a pastor friend long ago when I was a young college student, told me, “Hold fast the the Bible, it will get you out of any jam it gets you into!”
