Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies – Psalm 23:5

Rejected applications, separation and/or divorce, those dissatisfied no matter what, sarcastic teens letting you know you are out of touch, a snub here, a lack of coöperation there, even downright hostility — hey, it’s a fact of life.

Even in the midst of God’s banquet-like blessing the Psalmist pointedly adds, “my enemies all around!

Why can’t we all get along?! There could be lots of reasons or no reason, it’s life. While the Bible doesn’t say why, it does says what to do about it.

Don’t pay people back with evil for the evil they do to you. Focus your thoughts on those things that are considered noble. As much as it is possible, live in peace with everyone. Don’t take revenge, dear friends. Instead, let God’s anger take care of it. After all, Scripture says, “I alone have the right to take revenge. I will pay back, says the Lord.” — Romans 12:17-19 (God’s Word Translation)

  • Be as friendly as you can — work on your people skills
  • Don’t retaliate, turn those feelings over to God (he judges what’s right better than you)
  • Choose to not let it bother you, in fact, choose to happily move on with Christ ready to help even your enemies find the life changing power of Jesus

The Most Misunderstood

God and Satan talk in the Bible and it looks like a giant chess game with Job’s family as the pawns. In the garden God calls to Adam, “Where are you?”, but doesn’t he already know? Joshua is told by God to leave no survivors; where is the love and mercy in that?! People are offended by these and other scriptures, sometimes wanting nothing to do with God because if it.

We expend so much effort to avoid being misunderstood but God, the most misunderstood one of all, spends none.

Why? He doesn’t say (go figure).

But I think we can learn two (2) things:

  1. We need to know and love him as he is and on his terms — not how we want him to be on our terms.
  2. Peter said it best when asked if he, too, would leave that day like the others who had misunderstood one of Christ’s teachings,

“Lord, where would we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:68b)

  3. We need to stop expending so much energy to avoid being misunderstood.

Do what you think Jesus wants you to do then let it go.

and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this? – Mordecai (Esther 4:14)

Esther, the only book of the Bible that never specifically mentions God, is a great read — it has romance, intrigue, conflict, deliverance, and an important fact to remember.

God put us into political, social, and/or personal positions of influence for a reason.

Whether to a nation, a company, an organization, a family, or just to a sibling, each of us have some influence for the purpose of being God’s blessing.

We don’t know when or how God intends to use us until He provides the opportunity, then it is our’s to do the right thing, point to Christ, and christ-like living.

“God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us to do good works, which God planned in advance for us to live our lives doing. — Ephesians 2:10
