“[H]is Son, the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power”– Hebrews 1:1-3

1957 Plymouth Belvedere

In 1957 a grand experiment was conducted in Tulsa Oklahoma. A new Plymouth Belvedere was entombed in a “time capsule”, sprayed with cosmoline, wrapped in plastic, and buried in a concrete tomb, wheels off the ground.

What did they find fifty (50) years later? A heap of rust. Things deteriorate unless they are maintained. This world world be the same way were it not for Christ. As the Bible states,

“The earth is filled with your creatures. All of them depend on you … when you take away your breath, they die and go back to the dust from which they came. But when you give them breath, they are created; you give new life to the earth.” – Psalm 104:24-30 GNT

God did not spin the world off and forget it. Christ sustains it by his powerful word. This is not the power of some angel; he has never been an angel. Jesus, our risen Lord, is the one who has always sustained all things by the word of his power and we shall always be his special creation.

We need to stop looking at how big and powerful our problems are and focus on how big and powerful our Savior is.

God … hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son … the express image of his person, — Hebrews 1:1-3

Ever wonder why the second commandment — no images of God? I think it is partly because there is only one (1) legitimate image of God. Jesus said,

He that hath seen me hath seen the Father. — John 14:9

I noticed something in Business. Phone calls are helpful and e-mail is quick but they all can leave the wrong impression. It takes a face to face, person to person meeting to truly communicate.

We can see God’s creation, review history, read the Old Testament and still get the wrong impression — God came face to face, person to person in Jesus to show what he is really like.

Christ — An Analogy

God … hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son … the brightness of his glory” — Hebrews 1:1a,2a,3a

How does one express infinity in finite terms? By analogies — and here is a good one.

The term translated, “Brightness”, combines two words — one meaning “off or from” and the other meaning “to beam or shine”. The analogy is that of the Sun.

We don’t actually see the Sun, we see the rays emanating from it. Though the rays and the Sun are not exactly the same they are of the same essence and power. The rays are the Sun’s agents of warmth and life — block them out and nothing is left but cold and dark.

That’s who Jesus is — the brightness of God’s glory.

The Word was the source of life, and this life brought light to people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out … This was the real light, the light that comes into the world and shines on all people. — John 1:4-6,9 (Good News Translation)

Before we object, saying this is a historically unintended view of Christ, we need to recognize these writers were not gentiles imposing their own unique interpretation but were Jews well versed in Hebrew history and culture. Having experienced Christ firsthand they saw what God really meant in the ancient Hebrew texts

[T]he Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (translation:”God with Us”) — Isaiah 7:14
