“When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.” – Genesis 3:6

This story isn’t about the fruit (it could have been any forbidden thing) and it wasn’t about the woman (the man was right there watching in silence); the point of the story is about control.

The desire for control over their lives and destiny brought misery through poor choices and unseen consequences — just as it does today.

It takes human acts of yielding control to undo the damage. Christ yielded control, obtaining by the “fruit” (results) of the “tree” of the cross what was lost by the fruit of the tree in the garden. We yield control by taking our desires, ever so strong, and submitting them to God and his word, trusting he has our best interest at heart.

Prayer: “Jesus, thank you for coming to earth, putting on humanity, and dying on the “tree” of Calvary so I can put on Christ and live in your kingdom now and always. Amen

Sound Bite: “Jesus, put on humanity and lived here so I can put on Christ and live there.1

[Y]e pay tithe [but] have omitted the weightier matters of .. judgment, mercy, and faith” – Matthew 23:23

Those wanting just enough of God to be comfortable, just enough religion to feel good about themselves, were never happy with Jesus. He likes to meddle too much!

Jesus is not content to sit quietly as we live our lives our way. He’s like my youth director friend who was fired. He was doing fine, the pastor said, until he started asking the kids for commitment.

But that’s Jesus. To outsiders it’s considered meddling but to those who know him it’s not meddling at all — its his love and mercy. Doing the right thing is the blessing to us.

Sound Bite: “That’s not meddling, that’s God’s love!”
Prayer: “Jesus, have your way in me, help me to give my all for you. Amen!”

[The man healed of blindness] said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him. And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.

And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? – John 9:38-40

A tender, seemingly private moment between Jesus and a new follower when all of a sudden a Pharisee chimes in — having eavesdropped on the whole conversation!

Jesus, really, had no privacy. Later when accused of subversive teaching he truthfully said,

“I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.” – John 18:20

Two things I learn from this:

  1. Jesus did not get upset when his privacy was invaded, neither should I;
  2. Jesus taught nothing secretly, neither should God’s people.
