“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instruction for right living, so that the person who serves God may be fully qualified and equipped to do every kind of good deed.” – 2nd Timothy 3:16-17 (GNB)

Pete (my son) and I were headed for the golf course when he asked why the GPS speed did not match my speedometer.

We had a physics lesson and a Gospel lesson at the same time.

My speedometer measures velocity by calculating wheel rotation. If the tires are not as expected the calculation could be off by several miles per hour.

The GPS, however, uses satellites, calculating speed by tracking my global position, and it is spot-on as long as it can find the satellites.

I use my GPS not only to know where I am but to judge the accuracy of my speedometer.

The Gospel lesson?

God made us with a conscience we use to judge our actions, but it can be off because of personal desires, misunderstandings, and just bad judgment. That’s why God has, also, given us the Bible as external source of truth that is always spot-on.

We use the Bible to not only know where we are headed but to judge the accuracy of conscience.

“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” – 1st Thessalonians 5:23 (KJV)

We are more than just a body, soul, or spirit, but all three (3) at the same time; God is not the only trinity we interact with on a daily basis.

Two (2) additional things to note:

1) God doesn’t just “Save my soul” but is interested in me as a whole person.

2) God’s preservation begins before the return of Christ, not just in the “sweet bye-and-bye”.

I think this means that, though God sometimes allows me to experience suffering for my overall good (Romans 8:28) as any good parent would, all things being equal, God wants me healthy in my body, happy in my soul, and strong in my spirit beginning now and extending through the coming of Christ and into Eternity.

“…and some of you shall they cause to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake. But there shall not an hair of your head perish. In your patience possess ye your souls.” – Luke 21:16b-19 (KJV)

That’s curious – How can a person die yet not a hair of the head perish?!

Either this is an idiom for saying everything will turn out all right for the believer (good to know in a time of crisis), or it tells us two (2) other important things:

1) We need to adopt a broader viewpoint on life than the current one which starts at birth and ends when we expire (Matthew 10:28-30);

2) God cares more about our physical bodies than we give Him credit for (Romans 8:11)(Job 19:26).
