>Acts of God

“… the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. – 1st Kings 19:11b-13a (ESB)

Floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, and fires are call “Acts of God”, but Elijah knew the quiet whisper was the real “Act Of God” and that’s when he responded.

It has been said we miss the miraculous because we are looking for the spectacular. God chooses the ordinary – the low whisper, a blue collar carpenter family, a stable at an obscure inn of an obscure town, rough fishermen and IRS agents, even our own hands, feet, and possessions – to express Himself.

Being an ordinary expression of Christ is our mission, should we choose to accept it, and it is miraculous.

“…add to your faith…charity” – 2nd Peter 1:5b,7b(KJV)

Peter tells believers their faith still needs something to be successful. 1 He ends the list with “charity”, the Greek word “agape” (ah-gah-peh), meaning a selfless love expressed to those around us.

There is an old poem:

To dwell above with the ones we love…
Oh, that shall be glory!
But to dwell below with the ones we know…
Well, that’s a different story!

Love is not a feeling for someone gone or far away, it’s kindness done to a bad neighbor, to the co-worker who just threw us under the bus (you know what I mean), and to the teen with a bad attitude”.

Not automatic but something to be added, if we can’t make our faith work enough to be kind to these people our faith isn’t really working at all.

“Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” – 2nd Peter 1:1 (KJV)

The one revered as the rock upon which the church was built1 addressed his letter’s recipients as those who obtained faith, literally, “of equal value or honor” as his own.

There are no superstars in Christ no matter the age or position. We each have equal footing, equal value, equal weaknesses. Each are to be respected for that faith but opposed when errant2 . We, all, live by God’s righteousness available in the life of Jesus, the Christ.
