Tax men came to Peter and asked, “Does your teacher pay taxes?”

Peter said, “Of course.” But as soon as they were in the house, Jesus confronted him. “Simon, what do you think? When a king levies taxes, who pays—his children or his subjects?” He answered, “His subjects.”

Jesus said, “Then the children get off free, right?

Jesus made a special point to Peter that the kings of this world don’t charge their own children taxes. There are certain advantages to being a relative of the one in power.

Same with God — His Children live in His kingdom for free, too.

Why point that out? Because receiving Christ changes a person from being one of God’s “subjects/servant” to one of God’s “children”

So then, you are no longer a slave but a child. And since you are his child, God will give you all that he has for his children. – Galatians 4:7 (Good News Bible)

If you are Christ’s come to God as his child not his servant; it will change your prayer life!

I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. …To those outside the law I became as one outside the law that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. – 1st Corinthians 9:19-22

Today this sounds insincere – probably because of the word “win”, as if he is saying he pretends to be different things to different people to manipulate them.   But it would be a mistake to think that.

He was not saying he pretended to be something wasn’t nor did he try to manipulate.   Paul was a Jew so he could honestly relate to those who were Jewish – a jew can serve Christ and still be a jew, Paul did.   He was free from legalism (or “The Law”) so he could honestly relate to those who had no religious affiliation – they, too, can follow Christ’s laws, Paul did.   And he certainly knew weekness, completely relying on Christ to give him life – the weak can follow Christ in their weekness, Paul did.

Paul is saying he utilized his life experiences to bring the comfort and salvation of Jesus to all he met, regardless of their place in life’s menagerie.

All of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. – Galatians 3:27 (CEB)

Our criminal history with God has been expunged,1 so why continually dredge it up in prayer? Before coming to Christ, Yes! we need to be aware we are sinners in need of redemption, but not afterwards!

Though I am a sinner in my sight2 I am not one in his! He see me redeemed, clean, and dressed in his beloved son! He begins his character changing work in me, making me more like Christ in my actions, not from guilt but gratitude.

Prayer: Father, I am grateful that though I see my failures you see your son who died for my sins and ever lives his life in and through me!

Sound Bite: I have given my life to Christ, I am redeemed, and I will not let anyone tell me different.
