God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. – 2nd Corinthians 6;16b

We need to change our thought processes about hearing from God.

In the Old Testament, hearing from God meant going to a holy man who had the Holy Spirit. But something wonderful happened at Pentecost! Now, when someone asks to receive Christ, He comes to live on the inside! The children’s verse, “Come Into My Heart Lord Jesus” is not a euphemism but reality – the Bible says so!

So why do we think that unless we hear something from outside us we don’t hear God?

With Christ on the inside the speaking will be from the inside, too. You can tell his thoughts from yours – his are accompanied with great peace!

“And Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him was not what it had been. Then the LORD said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.” – Genesis31-2-3

It’s easy to hear God say what you want to hear – but easy is not always wrong.

Jacob, keeping his father-in-law’s sheep, noticed a strain in their relationship and he longed for home. God often works in these circumstances, like a mother eagle pulling feathers out of her nest so the little chicks become uncomfortable and want to fly.

So how does one know if the time is right for a change?

Two indicators:

  1. If the change requires manipulation of people or systems or a compromise of principles, be cautious. Most things I had to finagle ultimately turned out to be mistakes.
  2. If an opportunity is accompanied by an inner peace and a sense of excitement, God is probably involved.

If your circumstances become difficult, God opens the door, and you have peace about walking through,  take the step and don’t even look back.

I am enjoying a little book by pastor Bill Hybels1 on hearing God.

Not every impression has God as its source. Pastor Hybels has five tests to decide whether an impression is, truly, from God or somewhere else.

Test #1 – Is it consistent with God’s character? In Christ God’s prophetic words always Build up, Cheer up; and Stir up2. Even God’s discipline in Christ is encouraging – this is how he works. Nothing discouraging is from Him nor for His people.

Test #2 – Is it scriptural? The Bible is God’s revealed and inspired word, He would not give another word contradicting it.

Test #3 – Is it wise? God is the very creator of wisdom, he would never ask his children to do something stupid.

Test #4 – Is it in tune with your own character? God’s whispers to each of us align with our unique character and internal makeup. Our personalities are our own unique expression of Christ. His whispers will resonate within.

Test #5 – What do people you most trust think about it? Take time to develop trusted friends and counselors in Christ.
