What Does “Trusting” God Mean?

But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them – Psalm 5:11a

It it difficult to express in one language what another language is trying to convey — so it is with the little word, trust.

We think of trust as a feeling of confidence, but the Hebrews thought of it a slightly different way. This word literally means to flee for protection.

This is not presuming God will somehow step in if we need him to as we live our lives but us taking the initiative to figuratively run to Him for the right way to proceed, stepping cautiously as he directs.

Better to get his guidance and protection on the front end then asking him to clean up the mess and damage later.

Change in Prayer

At some point we stop telling God what we want and start being content with which ever way he decides to handle things.

Going Bald!!

But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore” – Jesus (Luke 12:7)

Personal experience informs me that number of hairs on my head is changing! And that’s exactly the point.

Jesus is bringing us back to a simple fact. If God is so aware of the least significant is he not also aware of what is most important in my life — my spouse, my work, my children, my loved ones, etc? Though, as with my hair, I don’t always like the results, I know God is involved and working the events of my life to my good and his love. And since I trust him, it is enough.

As the chorus of Civilla Martin’s 1905 hymn says,

“His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.”
