And, behold, a woman  .. stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. – Luke 7:38

Ancient Roman Tear Bottle

Washing Jesus feet behind him may not have been a problem, they often ate while reclining as pictured above, but how did this woman wash Jesus’ feet with her tears?

I don’t believe a person could cry so much so quickly that they could wash someone’s feet with those tears! Instead, I think this passage indicates another cultural detail we know little about – Tear Bottles.

They are first alluded to in Psalms 56:8, where David asks to have his tears put in God’s bottle, and they have been discovered by archeologist. These bottles contained every tear its owner ever shed. Every deep emotion was represented by those tears.

I think the Bible is indicating this woman loved Jesus so much she poured her entire emotional history on Jesus feet and wiped them away.

Grasshoppers!

[W]e saw the giants … and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. – Numbers 13:33

God sent spies into what was to be Israel’s future home land but they brought back a bad report — the whole nation lost their opportunity to enter because they saw themselves as “grasshoppers!”

God called them an army but they felt like grasshoppers! Isn’t that what happens to us? Our feelings don’t align with what God says and we lose out on divine opportunities! No more!

Prayer: Father, thank you that I am what you say, not what I feel. Help me to see in your word, the Bible, what I really am and what I really have in Christ. Amen.

Sound Bite: I’m no grasshopper!

A powerful king took Abraham’s wife, Sarah, to be his. Out of fear Sarah and Abraham had pretended to be siblings and now that a king was involved they were in a pickle!1

Then came two little words, “But God…”

We get ourselves into situations that look really bad – sometimes it’s our fault sometimes not. That’s when we need to remember, “But God…”, pray, trust, and obey.

How many “But God…” incidents can you recall. He’s got plenty more!
