I found a better way for me to sing the old hymn, “I Need The Every Hour”

I have Thee every hour,
Most gracious Lord;
No tender voice like Thine
Can peace afford.

Chorus
I have Thee, oh, I have Thee;
Every hour I have Thee;
You've blessed me now, my Savior!
I've come to Thee.

I have Thee every hour,
You stay near by;
Temptations lost their power
for Thou are nigh.

I have Thee every hour,
In joy or pain;
You came quickly to abide
For life was vain.

I have thee every hour,
Team me thy will;
And Thy rich promises
In me fulfill.

I have Thee every hour,
Most Holy One;
You've made me Thine indeed,
Thou blessed Son.

Some of my teens hung around a crazy kid in the neighborhood and no amount of warning or reasoning kept them away.

I tried to change my teenagers, that didn’t work.  I tried to change the crazy kid, that didn’t work.  I asked God to move the kid, and that didn’t work.

I even considered moving but realized that wouldn’t work either, my kids would just find someone else just like him to hang with.

It seemed like God put him there, just like God put the wrong tree in the garden (Genesis 2:9) when it all began.

It taught me:

  1. What we do, right or wrong, comes from our heart, not the opportunity;
  2. God is helping my children as they make their choices and learn how to make better ones, just like he helps me;
  3.  Jesus has the power to change anyone when they get serious about it.

“People who are immoral or who worship idols or are adulterers or homosexual perverts or who steal or are greedy or are drunkards or who slander others or are thieves—none of these will possess God’s Kingdom. Some of you were like that. But you have been purified from sin; you have been dedicated to God; you have been put right with God by the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Cor 6:9-11 (GNT)

I Surrender!

As a student pastor, praying one evening about what I would preach on Sunday, I had a disturbing thought.

What if all I do for the rest of my life is teach the Bible to a small handful of people?

“God,” I said, “I don’t mind doing this for a while as I prepare for real ministry but for the rest of my life?  This my life we are talking about; I want to do something exciting, different, make my mark in this world.”

That evening was a turning point for me; I surrendered and made an amazing discovery.

Trying to squeeze out of life what I want never satisfies.  Real satisfaction, joy, and lasting excitement comes through surrender.

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it. – Jesus (Mark 8:35 KJV)

I encourage you to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, dedicated to God and pleasing to him. This kind of worship is appropriate – Paul (Romans 12:1 GW)
