Off The Hook

Elijah was the same kind of person as we are. He prayed earnestly that there would be no rain, and no rain fell on the land for three and a half years. Once again he prayed, and the sky poured out its rain and the earth produced its crops. — James 5:17-18 (Good News Translation)

We want to think men and women of the Bible were somehow different, more holy or more powerful. It sort of lets us off the hook when we see their prayers answered and ours not. But it also robs us of expecting much when we pray.

The Bible says they were just like us with the same passions, feelings, struggles we have. Don’t see it as a hook to get off of, see it as an opportunity to grow and a privilege to appreciate.

God worked in their lives and he will work in ours if we grasp both this fact and faith in Christ.

Prayer:Thank you, Father, that as I stand in the righteousness that Jesus died to give I can pray like any other man or woman in the Bible and know you hear and answer. Amen.

“Don’t give the opposition a second thought. Through thick and thin, keep your hearts at attention, in adoration before Christ, your Master. Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you’re living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy” – 1 Peter 3:15 (Message Bible)

You don’t need to figure everything out or worry when you don’t understand what I am doing. A child only needs to know his dad loves him and will care for him.

There are harsh realities I will handle for you and with you. You don’t need to fear attacks, I am your Daddy, don’t even focus on them because I am defending you. You are not really that hurt. Though the devil is growling and saying you’re defenceless pay him no attention and keep your focus on Me. Don’t be frightened or anxious for there’s nothing he can do but talk — I have all the power and I have already spoken.

Your confidence in Me and My deliverance of you demonstrates My faithfulness to a lost and dying world. Move right on, attacks are nothing more than flies at a picnic.

Some people find analogies everywhere. Not being a fan of “Haunted Houses”, myself, I can still appreciate how some learn from almost any experience. Don Miller, author and blogger, relates what he learned leading a group through a local “Haunted House”

Donald Miller

“The trick to leading a group through a haunted house is knowing the scary stuff can’t actually kill you. The management won’t let them.

It’s the same with all the scary stuff we have to deal with, all the fear of abandonment and loneliness and wounds we have to address. They aren’t allowed to kill us. Sure we might feel some fear, and a lot of it. But in the end (even if it kills our earthly bodies) we don’t die. We just come through the other side with a knowledge we faced our fears, and we got out of that haunted house alive, our screaming and giggling friends in tow. — Don Miller 09/23/2011

Jesus said scary times are coming — and today’s news makes it seem like they are here! But Jesus also told his followers how to lead through scary times — by looking up and knowing we are closer than ever to our hope.

Be not terrified … there shall not an hair of your head perish … Men’s hearts [shall be] failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken … [but] when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. Luke 21:9, 18, 26

Remember your hope, they can’t kill us. The management won’t let them.
