Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. – Proverbs 7:2
The “Apple” of the eye originally meant the central aperture we look through — it lets the light in.
Using sight as a metaphor, this Proverb is telling us to “view” things the way God’s Word filters them — to adopt his opinion on things. To do this, of course, means making a conscious effort to learn what the Bible says and taking it seriously.
Or, to use another metaphor — today’s Sound Bite: “Open minds are like open windows — you need a screen to keep the bugs out!”
