“Unto This Day”

“But Joshua spared Rahab … because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho—and she lives among the Israelites to this day. – Joshua 6:25”

Some biblical scholars theorize the five (5) Books of Moses and Joshua were, really, written hundreds of years later as a compilation from various ancient oral traditions (Wellhausen’s Documentary hypothesis).

One “proof” they offer is the many “unto this day” references — 28 of them in the first six (6) books of the bible.

Certainly the stories were codified after the events but Joshua 6:25 gives us a framework of how long afterwards it was — by saying Rahab was still living at the time of the writing.

Maybe we should not take some of those biblical “scholars” as seriously as they would like.

Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. – Proverbs 7:2

The “Apple” of the eye originally meant the central aperture we look through — it lets the light in.

Using sight as a metaphor, this Proverb is telling us to “view” things the way God’s Word filters them — to adopt his opinion on things. To do this, of course, means making a conscious effort to learn what the Bible says and taking it seriously.

Or, to use another metaphor — today’s Sound Bite: “Open minds are like open windows — you need a screen to keep the bugs out!”

Lamp for the Feet

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. – Psalm 119:105

I remember camping on the beach with my dad, we always had our Coleman lantern, the kind we had to fill and pump, and we always held it low to the ground so we could see what was in front of us – holding it up high did not help much.   There was always stuff to avoid stepping on at night and going without a lantern was just plain silly!

God’s word, the Bible, like that old lantern, is a “a light to my path”. It shows the truth about where we are about to step.

It won’t show what’s going to be there six months down the road and it won’t always say what to do about what you see – you ought to be smart enough not to step on something if you see it.

Sound Bite: Going camping without a lantern is silly, so is living without your Bible.
